This fungus causes disease on a number of pine species. No chemical controls are available. The only recommendation, when practical, is to prune out all cankered branches, making cuts through healthy, white wood. Destroy or bury pruned branches. The incidence of this disease increases when susceptible pines are planted densely, such as in Christmas tree plantations. Cankers enlarge quickly in the first year, but then grow very slowly for about a decade after which time they become inactive.
