Plant Name:Tomato

Plant Type:Vegetables
Disease Name:Bacterial Canker
Pathogen Scientific Name:Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis
Pathogen Type:Bacterium
Synonyms:
Description:Bacterial canker is a contagious and serious problem on greenhouse tomato. This disease causes a systemic wilt of the plant. Once a plant is infected with this bacterium, there are no effective control options. In the greenhouse affected plants and plants adjacent to affected plants should be removed from the greenhouse. This disease can also be a problem on field-grown tomatoes. Bacteria may be seed borne, so using disease-free seed is recommended. Otherwise, seeds can be treated; however, this is not 100% effective at eliminating this bacterium. If purchasing transplants purchase only certified plants to avoid the diseases. This bacterium can also remain viable from growing season to growing season on infested plant residue, wooden stakes and/or harbored in perennial weed hosts or other plant hosts. Always use pasteurized growing media and new or thoroughly disinfested containers. Spread can occur mechanically on hands, clothing, tools, splashing water, and by other similar means. Wash hands well before moving to new locations in the greenhouse or among greenhouses. Disinfest pruning tools regularly and avoid contact with plants whenever possible. Also avoid working among plants when they are wet.
